It was a lovely day today - blue skies, fluffy cumulus floating around, the buzzards were soaring in the thermals overhead. For me today marked the start of this years solar observing starting up again, the sun is suitably high so as to be clear of the rooftops and trees from my garden. Didn't manage to get as many images as I would like - various factors conspiring against me, however mustn't grumble! First off is a near full disk. Solar activity is slowly but surely increasing and today had a pretty sun... Ha Full Disk 12th Feb 2011 by Mark Townley, on Flickr Next up a closeup of activity around the limb... AR1159 11th Feb 2011 by Mark Townley, on Flickr And finally a closeup of AR1158 in whitelight... AR1158 11th Feb 2011 by Mark Townley, on Flickr I'm looking forward to solar observing this year!

Beautiful shots Mark - especially with the flare detail.

Thanks for the kind words guys! Anton, setup i'm using is pretty modest in solar circles - I use a double stacked 40mm Coronado etalon mounted on a 70mm f6 refractor, shot 3 was taken with the same scope but with a solar wedge on it. Mark

Excellent work Mark!, great to see sunspot images again. Congrats on catching these interesting new groups, I was very interested in seeing 1158 which looks to be one to watch for Earth directed flares.

Thanks for the kind words! AR1158 threw off a M6 flare a couple of hours ago, so there is a CME heading earthboud. If we had clear skies later this week there would be a decent chance of aurora...
