Beautiful shots John, looks like the 50mm. M 42 really stands out and the hint of clouds makes for a nice photo. Hope we get some clearing skies soon, I'm getting anxious to get back out to the stars.

Very nice John, I especially like the first image, M42 is great and the Belt and Sword look proud. Like the warm and cool colours of the light cloud and blue stars, attractive image.

Thanks guy's for the comments.
Yes Richard the 50mm was used, but for some reason I just couldn't keep the lens in focus, it was cold and damp and this seems to knock the lens off focus, have you any problems like that with yours? I find it a great lens but difficult to use sometimes depending on the weather. I'll try again on a better night.

I haven't noticed cold or damp weather affecting the focus, just getting it focused as you know. Without live view on our 400D's it's a guessing game, sometimes we get it right on and sometimes not. I usually zoom in on the first photo or two I take and look at the stars and check it that way. If not sharp I go find my neighbor's security light and re-focus! I found my kit lens 18-55 non IS would seem to somehow unfocus after a shot ot two, very strange. Since I bought the IS version of the 18-55 I haven't had that problem. We'll keep pluging away!
