John C, I'm not sure what caused that shape to be honest. There where three different cloud types at the time ahead of a weak warm front which I could see moving in from the NW. Cirrus was near the horizon, alto cumulus higher up, and at middle was that strange stratus-style structure which had numerous wave-like forms and thin linear streaks. I can't add much more than that I'm afraid.
