In the last one showing the moon on the right if you look between the masts and near the horizon that dot is the planet Venus! Great images but that last one is really special! From 00:30 BST I was suffering from thick mist / thin fog which came & went a bit but spoiled the view more than I thought at the time, your images really do show how extensive the display was. Padraig, like most astro subjects it really helps to set everything to manual - if you have a "landscape" mode (mountain symbol on the mode dial) that should help you get the focus right if you can't focus manually as "landscape" mode makes the camera focus on infinity. Also set the camera to daylight colour balance (the sun symbol). Start at about 5 sec @ f/4, ISO 400 and adjust until the histogram looks reasonable - experience is the real key but you don't want anything in the sky "bleached out" through overexposure, a bit of underexposure can be adjusted in the computer so that's the safe direction to make an error in.

Great time lapse Paul and stunning images Brian and John. That 2nd one down is incredible with the NLCs illluminating the fog!!. Catching Venus in the display was really something special John! Here's a selection of the images I took last night which you can see on my website. I almost filled a 2GB card! http://www.nightskyhunter.com/Sky%20Events%20Now.html

Thanks very much Brian and Martin, yeah I was really pleased to get a few shots with Venus rising in the display never mind the moon. I also like the ones with the "blue fog" as well. Perhaps I should also point out that the effect was natural and could be seen with the eye. It really was a fantastic display which will be hard to equal, but one never knows! It's great to see so many great images being posted, sure puts other places to shame!
