Title: Moon mosaic re-done!
Post by: John9929 on August 08, 2008, 05:24:37 pm
Cloudy weather can be useful sometimes! Here is a moon mosaic I re-done the other day. It's made up
from 12 avi of over 300 images each totalling about 3,500 images in all. The avi were taken a couple of
years ago using the ETX90mm and Philips Toucam. To get the benifit of the full image follow the links
through Tinypic and view at full screen. Hope you like it!

Maybe but we seem to have had more than enough recently!

Quite so Brian!

John, that's quite excellent! Only one thing I would do based on what I've learned - expose it a bit under and when adjusting levels leave a bit to spare at the top end - reason being that any added sharpening will use a bit more headroom and if you've already set your levels to use all of the histogram you've got none to spare which gives rise to the "snow capped mountains" effect which is localised areas of blown highlights.

But it's a great piece of work!

P.

Brian, that may well be so, but we have to make use of the time doing something else rather than watch TV!

Thanks for the advice Paul, I forgot you were an expert processor ;D I have never used the full histogram on any of the images. The "snow capped mountains" do appear on the small version downsized by Tinypic, but I wonder did you download the large version, they are not nearly so pronounced? A lot of work went into making that mosaic, and it's not always possible to get everything perfect taking in the timescale to take the original avi.

John, no the "snow-capped mountains" aren't bad at all - I went right through to the "RAW" shot. It really is good - there's a couple of areas where there's a bit of burnout - near the South Pole and also near the Mare Marginis - that's much more understandable as it is the most illuminated part of the Moon in that view.

I have become somewhat obsessive about burnt out whites so do excuse me:-)

Yip, that's a beauty John. Fantastic terminator detail there. I think that is time very well spent on a cloudy night. Good to keep the skills sharp to  :)
