Title: All the sky.....
Post by: John9929 on May 27, 2009, 11:14:08 am
Well nearly! This was taken a couple of mornings ago just before dawn which accounts for the bright sky. It was taken with the fisheye conversion lens pointed at the zenith for only 36 seconds at f4.5. The lens certainly has potential but it's a pain to get focused, however this is not bad for a first test.

That's a great perspective John. Getting to dark skies would really improve the detail. I can make out Ursa Major, Polaris, Cygnus and the underlying Milky Way. The clouds really add interest to the image. Great job!!

Thanks Richard, yeah it was taken far too late, in fact 02:46BST, the sky was already getting bright.  A good dark night and location might work wonders. I can see 9 constellations but I'm sure there are more.

That's a great image John. wonderful perspective with loads of potential for things like meteor showers and Aurora. That would be a great tool for the Perseids, you should rename that lens to 'the fireball catcher'. I like the effect of the cloud streaks on the R. I can see about 15 contsellations. That would be a great set-up for moonbows  :)

That's very good indeed John! As it happens I'm working on an all-sky camera myself but I'm thinking of a mirror based solution - of the sort that shops use for surveillence! Of course the difference thee is that the camera will always be in shot, but the view is so wide that it should look quite small!

And as Martin says, ideal for meteor showers!

Great shot John!!!  If only if we had dark skies...  ;)

Congratulations on a very nice image John. Regarding the meteor suggestion it may worth considering taking a series of back to back shots (best done with a remote timer) assuming that you're using a driven system, and then if you've been lucky & caught the odd bright meteor or fireball, stack them together which will register the stars - but show the several meteors captured all in the one shot. I've been meaning to try this idea for a while now but have been unlucky with the weather on suitable nights.

Anyway, just a thought!  8)

Thanks Andy, it's a thought that never crossed my mind, and certainly worth a try.
