Here was an interesting sunrise on Jan 4. Not sure what this phenomenom is called, maybe just cloud shadows below the horizon? Very colorful though, unedited. This all happened very quickly, the wavetops on the ocean behind me were all orange, but by the time I spun around to get that shot, the coloring was gone.

It looks as though there was an extension in the edge of a cloud layer which is casting a shadow onto the otherwise sunlit bottom of the cloud layer. Or possibly haze layer. But most likely cirrostratus. The extension could possibly be a rapidly widening contrail.

What an interesting shot, Richard. It is more likely to be a shadow of something like a cloud layer as Brian said. It reminded me a sunset of July 05. There was indeed a cloud (Sc?) low above the horizon casting shadow on the As layer.

Excellent and unusual shot Richard!. Looks like some kind of shadow, the sunset colours are very intense, could that be a volcanic sunset?. You should send that image into Les Cowley for an expert opinion!
