Hi
My name is Martin Mc Kenna, I live in Maghera, N. Ireland and I have been interested in astronomy for more than a decade now. Since my first sighting of great comet Hale-Bopp back in 1997 I decided to get into astronomy in a big way. I got a small reflector and fell in love with the deep sky hunting for Messier and NGC objects. Since comets were my main passion I made a vow to observe every comet I could find with my telescope and also undertake a systematic search for a new object in the hope of making a discovery. This project is still underway. During this period my astronomical interests expanded to cover many areas. I now devote my time to transient phenomena such as meteor showers, auroras, Noctilucent clouds, etc.
I bought my first digital camera two years ago and have now began my first steps along the long road of astrophotgraphy. I now try my best to catch those transient phenomena on camera.
During 2006, and in particular 2007, I developed a very sudden and unexpected interest in thunderstorms. Several storms during this period, including an adrenaline inducing funnel cloud encounter have now got me hooked on convective weather events in a major way. They are also very photogenic and challenging!
Currently I also contribute to Spaceweather.com, Astronomy & Space Magazine, BBC, Astronomy Now Magazine.
I run a website here...
