I was always thinking about this question: is it possible to play golf when there is snow on the ground? BTW, I have read somewhere that some people in S America played golf during the winter using a red ball.

some people in S America played golf during the winter using a red ball. Makes sense, easier to find on a snow surface. But why not try brass balls, there's lots of monkeys around in South America....

That's a lovely shot John, great atmosphere, you can feel the cold just looking at it!
I have played golf in snow in England - used an orange ball!

Fantastic photo John. Golfers are a diehard breed. That would be an interesting canender, golfers in all the elements. On the Oregon Coast, I've seen them teeing off on the first in an 80 mph gale with the rain blowing sideways. I didn't stick around to see if anyone made the green or not!

80 mph gale with the rain blowing sideways. Common enough weather in these parts ... I guess if you have to play into it you just use the Texas Wedge (putter) for all shots! Golfers are a diehard breed. Yeah, but it's very noticeable how much more popular the 19th is than the others

Beautifully caught John. I don't suppose we can really mock the golfers given that many of us go out at night in sub zero temperatures to look at faint fuzzies!

That is why I'm asking - I have nowhere seen orange golf balls for sale I don't suppose we can really mock the golfers given that many of us go out at night in sub zero temperatures to look at faint fuzzies!

Good shot John. You have to wonder, that's gotta alter the entire dynamics of the game

that's gotta alter the entire dynamics of the game Yeah, my guess is that with a nice firm fairway the drive will bound further ... but backspin probably won't be as effective, and at low speeds like on the green the friction of the ball breaking the hoar frost will make it "roll" like the green is soft & sticky. But it wouldn't help or hinder me at all, the ball would still end up irretrievable in the river or gorse bush every time I hit it.

So must interest , marvellous. I just thought that with the lovely background (how pleasant to live there in the hills) it might make a nice shot- seems it did. It's a funny old world. You can go to great lengths to get a shot ,drive miles, wait for the right light, etc. and yet sometimes the casual shot wins the day. I think what appealed to me as well was the pristine conditions it seemed to invite a photo and the light was superb too. Well, many thanks for all your comments, much appreciated.
