Yesterday morning I left home at 7.15 to go to a location in the Forest of Dean (30 miles ) to photograph a small lake with the sunrise quality light and on the way I saw the setting moon. I was stuck behind a slow moving juggernaut and when it was going up hills, of which there are many, it was down to 28mph. and less,the roads are narrow and bendy so I was unable to get passed it.I should have stopped and taken what was there in the way of a photo but I thought I'd be ok at another location high up. I got there just in time to see the moon dipping below the distant hills - I won't bore you with the shot - it would have been a nice photo. had I got there just 10 minutes earlier. I then went to the lake and then went looking for birds. On the way home,feeling a bit peeved about that moon shot, I was on the brow of a hill and saw an inversion to my right in the valley,a bit further on I saw the whole Severn valley,including the river Severn, was under an inversion. I stopped this time lol..Got some shots of the part of it near me going over a 5 bar gate on which was a notice..'Private Property (an Energy company it seems) -keep out,trespassers will be prosecuted'. So, keen to get my photo. as we all are on here lol... I climbed over the gate and walked across the field. there were pheasants there too walking around and they ran off. These are photos 1-4. I positioned my camera so the sun was behind the tree trunk and thus avoided a horrible glare and it's worked ok. I then wanted to get over to the hills opposite to look down on the rest of the Severn Valley in this area so I drove back the way I'd come and turned off the main road towards the inversion area. The narrow road and fog photo number 5 is in the valley-had to take a quick shot through the windscreen as there was a car coming up behind. On the top of a hill I saw the inversion very close and stopped to take photos 7 & 8. I then drove on to get on top of a yet higher hill. The rest were taken here and into sunset. I left in the dark.              |

I love those "Golden Hour" shots John. # 2 is really a beauty. I guess the inversion is what I would call low clouds and fog. Really a nice set of photos!

Thanks Richard. I thought I was photographing an inversion a week or so ago but it wasn't, I'm sure this is though.
Mark. They were taken at Micheldean and Littledean..Forest of Dean.

Wonderful images John, id say no.4 is my favourite but they're all good, you've been busy man driving back and forth buts its definitely been worth it  |

Outstanding images John!, got to love those fog scenes during the magic light hour as Richard mentioned. 6th image up from the bottom is stunning....feels like one could run across the fog as if it was a field of snow then touch the rising sky. . Thanks for the report. |

Many thanks. I took a few photos at that location,Paul - moving around.
Martin- agree - made me want to walk over it- same feeling you get looking down on a sea of cloud from a plane.
Andy- I think a lot of photography is about dedication and perseverance,I could have carried on driving home as I'd been up early but whatever it is, it takes over and off you go. and sometimes you get lucky.
