TORRO CONVECTIVE DISCUSSION 2010/002

A TORRO CONVECTIVE DISCUSSION has been issued at 18:10 on Monday 17th January 2011

Valid from/until: 18:10 – 06:00GMT on Monday 17th January/Tuesday 18th January 2011 for the following regions of the United Kingdom & Eire:

Southern England

THREATS

Isolated tornadoes; CG lightning; heavy rain; hail; gusty winds

SYNOPSIS

Slow-moving, broad upper trough to the west of the British Isles. A number of short-wave troughs in the SW'erly flow ahead of it. One such trough will move ENE across southern parts of the UK this evening and overnight, and interact with a moisture tongue/occluded front. Lift/cooling associated with the trough is destabilising the moisture plume, with a large area of rain, with embedded convection, apparent on the radar/satellite imagery. This will move ENE through this evening and overnight - instability is indicated in southern coastal counties, so thunderstorms are possible. With marked veering in the lower atmosphere, a small risk of weak tornadoes exists, should any storm root into the boundary layer.

Forecaster: RPK.
