Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the wild boar that now roam the Forest of Dean but when I was down there photographing the autumn colours I stopped off at this picnic spot by the lakes (in autumn photos) and  I saw this damage. I had no idea what it as and wondered why the Forestry Commission would do this- maybe some kind of land management but a local there told me it was what the wild boars are doing all over the Forest and the roadside verges. They also go into peoples' back gardens foraging. To show the size of just one dig I put my cap alongside. They're digging for roots and acorns and beasties.

Here's an article on it from 2008 so they've been around for a while now.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/content/articles/2008/03/27/west_midlands_boars_s13_w5_feature.shtml

WOW, they could ruin a nicely landscaped yard in no time at all, and your right about a muddy mess that would become. I have a friend who lives in Mobile, Alabama, and they bow hunt wild boar every season and he has come up with some whoppers. I don't know if they hunt boar over there or if that's just a wild west thing in the States!

I don't think anyone, other than licensed people can kill these Boar,Richard. The Forest Commission have stepped up the culling,I can't find any information that tells me it's legal. for anyone to hunt them. You'd need a powerful rifle anyway and we have very strict gun law here.

Wow!  I've seen that before down there in the Dean - wondered what it was / caused it...  Learn something new everyday!  Smiley
