A type of tornado hit the coastline of Portrush on Tuesday night. Ryan McLaughlin, 23, was in his flat in Kerr Street, which overlooks the harbour, when he caught the action on his mobile phone. A funnel of cloud is clearly visible over the West Strand of the town. Ryan told U105 that it was a frightening experience.

It was basically a big dark grey cloud. It came down to a point but disappeared in the middle. It hit the water and hit the coastline and the water rose up. It looked like a tornado."

Belfast Met Office forecaster John Wylie says the freak weather event was a type of tornado but because it hit water, it is technically a "water spout."

"Water spouts are more common in the British Isles and Ireland but they are much smaller beasts which affect parts of North America," he told Frank Mitchell.

The picture of the water sprout, used for this story, was sent to UTV by Paddy McGarry, from Portrush.

Really good catch! I remember as a kid fishing of the rocks at Newcastle harbour seeing one. Really cool to watch...  Grin
