Just as Jonathan and I were going out last night to join the observing session and as we got to the top of Maghaberry Hill we spotted this lovely sunpiller. As we headed towards our destination it got the redder! The second image was taken through the windscreen while on the motorway. These images are true colour and resized only.

That's a beautiful John, and while driving at that. That one seems to be quite tall, a lot more than the one's I've seen here.

Very well captured John, especially the 2nd image taken while in transit which looks very dramatic above the road with car lights, that looks to have been a good 15 degrees or more in height, I saw it from here too and it looked very pink however I couldn't get an image. It's always great to catch a nice sun pillar.

Thanks for the replies.
Martin it must have 15 to 20 degrees tall from here, one of the tallest I've seen in a while. As said, it got the redder as the sun set but we couldn't get anywere to stop and the hard shoulder isn't such a good idea! Jonathan did try one of the roundabouts but no hard shoulder there either so we gave up.
That's a lovely image Conor, I like the verticle approach.
Richard, Jonathan was driving so my hands were free, it isn't such a good idea to try that stunt with so much traffic about!

Beautiful image Coner, great colors!.
John, I figured the one who wasn't driving was doing the shooting, although I see people do it all the time. The photo still looks strange to me because the cars are on the wrong side of the road!!!

That's a great shot of the pillar and relection Paul. I've never seen the reflection before as I only see them over the ocean which is a bit rough. Thanks.
