Just found this on the BBC NI wesbite, a funnel cloud captured before sunset from Maghaberry, N. Ireland last Friday by John McConnell.



John said it lasted for 5 min's with movement seen in real time. A larger version of the image is on the NI gallery...

This is very unusual since the sky doesn't look solid or even like the base of a convective cell, a very unusual site indeed and a good case for John Tyrrell to look into. There must have been convergence over this part of NI that evening.

Well done John, a sunset funnel that is apparently formed from nothing, you can see the blue sky directly above and around the wispy looking clouds. I would love to know the conditions that day and how this rare funnel formed-very interesting.
