That's Ailsa Craig, a rock 40 miles from my house and also over 1000ft high - it marks the entrance to the Firth of Clyde.
It's my own personal "Stonehenge" in that around the time of the Summer Solstice the Sun rises from right behind it as viewed from my house. However such is the weather over the North Channel that in the four years I've lived in my current house I've only managed to see this phenomenon once!
Very interesting. I watched an article in Wikipedia, there are many close-up photos. Have you been on that island?
