Noticed at 10:25 BST this morning (14 May) as the sky was clearing following early morning rain/showers. The colours in the high cloud (anvil?) were much further from the sun than the usual 22 degree halo, approx. 40 degrees away; the sun would be in the 10 o'clock position in relation to the arc fragment shown in the image. I think this was a fragment of the fairly rare 46 degree halo, possibly reinforced by an infralateral arc.

This image is cropped giving a field of view of approx. 8 degrees by 6 degrees.

Nice shot Brian.  My 'Rainbows, Halos and Glories' book has probably got to be one of my most used books I own, I always like to keep my eye open for some atmospheric optics...  Cool

Very interesting image Brian, and well spotted. It could be a section of a rare 46 degree halo, or maybe even part of a supralateral arc, in any case it was a rare one. Must have formed on the anvil of a big shower as you said. Check out this halo/arc map from Les Cowley...
