I see that the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano is heading right over the UK and airports are cancelling flights. I assume this will give us some attractive sunsets over the next few evenings.

Cool video there John, yes widespread disruption for flights looks likely not just in the UK but for NW Europe in general. Volcanic ash and Jet engines are not a good mix.   The potential for some lovely sunrise/sunsets is definitely exciting and worth keeping a watch for!!

Did anyone else notice a fine layer of dust on surfaces yesterday? I had this on the car yesterday morning, I wonder is it related to the events in Iceland?

More than likely tree pollen at this time of year in this sort of weather. My nose says so too (atishoo!)

There is a danger from flying right through the ash cloud at a short distance - where the cloud is optically thick - but it takes a lot to stop a jet engine. The recorded examples of engine loss due to volcanic ash have been at ranges of tens of kilometres from the erupting volcano, not hundreds or thousands. Stopping flights in the UK is a gross over-reaction.

OTOH if if means no contrails blotting out the sky, I hope the volcano keeps erupting forever!

Sorry to hear about the hayfever Brian, I have heard reports from all over Omagh of dust/ash deposits but its not the volcano, a huge gorse fire 10 miles away in Gortin is being blamed.

Looking at the wind patterns and weather forecast, I would say that being up early for sunrise tomorrow morning is a must!

Just noticed sferics charts showing lightning over the area of the volcano and to the south suggesting it could be associated with a dense ash cloud and the formation of Pyrocumulus cloud?       http://andvari.vedur.is/athuganir/eldingar/

Noted that, Paul I'm .Just turning in after the political debate and will check sunrise time but the bulk  ad thickest of this ash cloud is heading over Scandinavia but as Dennis has shown us he's had a superb sunset. I did venture out hoping to see what Dennis saw but it was just a regular sunset.

Great shots there Dennis.

Grrr. Partial listing af airspace restrictions, two aircraft over so far & upper air which was gin clear whilst the filght ban was in place is already filling with contrail derived cirrostratus.

Excellent Dennis, and very well taken, lovely scenes there!  Smiley

It was strange to see not a single plane last night at all - that's a new experience for me. The stars looked incredible too, and if it were not for the sats crossing the sky it would have been like how the ancients saw the stars with nothing manmade up there at all - quite an experience.
