Not a perfect day but the Sun shone for a while.

The new active region 11054 in the north east sector has developed into a "white light" spot group with two large spots with clearly differentiated penumbrae & umbrae. There are also pores associated with active region 11055 south of the disc centre.


2010 Mar 12, 1131 UT. PST CaK, prime focus, DMK41.


2010 Mar 12, 1136 UT. 80mm, Baader solar film @ solar continuum filter, Atik 0.5x focal reducer (f/4), DMK41.

AR 1054:

2010 Mar 12, 1140 UT. 80mm, Baader solar film @ solar continuum filter, 4x Imagemate (f/24), DMK21.


2010 Mar 12, 1300 UT. Lunt 60mm & B1200 CaK diagonal, 4x Imagemate (f/33), DMK21.

AR 1055:

2010 Mar 12, 1259 UT. Lunt 60mm & B1200 CaK diagonal, 4x Imagemate (f/33), DMK21.

In Ha, several prominence groups are visible, also an elongated filament north of the disk centre and a broad one near the west limb.


2010 Mar 12, 1207 UT. Solarscope 60, Atik 0.5x focal reducer (f/5), DMK41.

AR 1054:

2010 Mar 12, 1217 UT. Solarscope 60, 4x Imagemate (f/32), DMK21.

AR 1055:

2010 Mar 12, 1215 UT. Solarscope 60, 4x Imagemate (f/32), DMK21.

Centre filament:

2010 Mar 12, 1213 UT. Solarscope 60, 4x Imagemate (f/32), DMK21.

W limb filament:

2010 Mar 12, 1210 UT. Solarscope 60, 4x Imagemate (f/32), DMK21.

Major Prominences:

2010 Mar 12, 1228 UT. Solarscope 60, 2x barlow (f/16), DMK21.


2010 Mar 12, 1227 UT. Solarscope 60, 2x barlow (f/16), DMK21.

Transparency good but with drifting cloud at times. Seeing moderate. Temp 10C, wind N force 4.

Absolute classy images Brian, excellent work taking advantage of those sunny spells today. That new group looks like one to watch, NOAA say it's capable of C, or even M-class flares. A CME erupted from the Sun today just as that bright Kruetz sungrazing comet closed in on the Sun with it's long tail. I will be having a white light session on Sat.

Got a look today (13th), 1054 is a naked eye sunspot!

Thanks guys!

Just in from another session, starting to move huge files to places they can be processed from ... yeah, AR1054 has grown since yesterday ... there's also a whole mass of filaments all over the north of the disk, and a most amazing prominence on the west limb, obviously derived from the filament I imaged yesterday.

Simply outstanding Brian. I particularly like the prominences which you've brought out beautifully.

Just out of interest (as someone who has never tried solar imaging) roughly how long did it take to process these images?

The high resolution surface images processed with Avistack are 15 - 20 mins computer time each. Low res surface & prominence shots are done using Registax which is much faster, around 5 mins each. Post processing I have down to a fine art & can do in less than 1 min per image. I tend to have 2 or 3 computers working in parallel ...
