I didn't want to start a new topic for this so I'll throw these images in here, even though I didn't have to do any panning or much focusing, just try to dodge the waste as it dropped. It was like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds", with a little intimidation from me.

Excellent shots Richard. Given that your backgrounds are so sharp, you must have been using a small aperature, F11 or so. It must therefore have been quite bright to freeze the action as you have so well done. Gulls can be quite scary when they are behaving as per your shot.

Thanks for the comments John. Going back and looking at the exif, they were shot at 1/500 sec @ f 7.1 55mm with my 55-250. Basically, I went down there with the intention of mass shots like these to see how many different wing positions I could get, and I think I ran the board. I was actually a little afraid to zoom in on any one bird and take my eye off the others because I was so close to them. I'm learning a lot between you and John C. Luckily digital images are free!
