Floods in Raheny, Dublin - 9th August 2008

Just thought you might like to see some photos of the floods we had down here in Dublin last weekend.

The River Santry is normally nothing more than a large stream.  Here's what 52mm of rain in 90minutes does to a little 'Stream'  The footbridge pictured is my normal routh to the train station!



Normally the water level is about 6 feet below this footbridge



The kids took advantage of something a bit different to have some fun.



The river broke banks at acouple of places thankfully the footballpitch is below the level of the houses in the area.

Wow. I think it's ridiculous that a country comes to a stand still because of a bit off rain could you imagine what would happen if we did get a major storm doesn't bear thinking about.

Yeah, it's like South East England grinding to a halt if two flakes of snow fall.

If the problem you have in Dublin is anything like what we have Up North, the gullies get bunged up by debris thrown in by unthinking idiots and then not cleared until the next heavy rainfall has caused the resulting flood to ruin property. Made a great deal worse by new developments being allowed to join drainage & sewerage onto existing systems without a thought as to what happens when the design capacity downstream is exceeded.

Those are very dramatic images Dave, especially the bridge shots!. Like the low level capture to. I heard you got things really bad in Dublin. Thanks for sharing those exciting images with us. A few days later came our turn...
