In the latter part of last night (22nd) and the early hours of the morning today (23rd) there was decent auroral activity visible.  If you look at the historical POES data http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/pmap/Plots.html there were various points where the KP index touched 6.  I was wondering if any of you were out snapping NLCs and may have some sneaky aurora visible low down in their images?  Anybody?  Roll Eyes

Hi Mark, I noticed on that night that the KP was at 6 and IMF was far south and knew there was a major aurora visible at that very time, unfortunately I was completely clouded out here all night. Had it been 24 hours earlier than I would have had it on camera...very annoying. It must have been a good display because it was imaged from Nebraska by Mike Hollingshead on the same night. For me, it was the 'display which got away'.

Thanks very much Paul, I got the magazine through the post last week.  Smiley

Lovely images Jonathan and Dennis!. The season will be drawing to a close soon so it will be interesting to see what will happen before it ends.

There can't be much left of this years season as you say, which is a shame, it see,ms to have gone quick!  Also seems to have been a prolific year for them  Roll Eyes

Thanks Mark, yes the season must surely be drawing to a close very shortly, the last display I seen was on the night before last, it was faint and unimpressive, so that might be it for this year. Having said that I wouldn't be a surprised if a major display briefly appeared after sunset or before dawn on any of these nights...so still worth keeping watch.

This was/is the best NLC season I have ever seen in my life with truly breathtaking shows, so many type 5 displays, so many all-sky coverage, all with rich colours and awesome stucture. It has been a season I shall never forget and which all future seasons will be compared with. The 2010 NLC seasons has a lot to live up to....

can i direct you all to Rainmaker, from Germanys, video summary of the 2009 season.  This is simply stunning and would wholeheartedly recommend you put aside the 8 minutes to see it all.

That is an excellent summary of this years season Martin!

You are certainly blessed with light pollution free skies where you are, certainly compared to where I am!
