I think you need to get a bit closer, John Those ring flashes are about £250 I think.

Thanks Declan and John. John, as for getting closer, I could put the ebay tubes in... At least double the magnification I think.... but the DOF is so short, I doubt I could get an entire eye in focus... (I did try this combo once.... I can post the pic if you like) A Mirumi ring flash can be had for about 100, but I've blown too much money on astro gear already this year ... new mount, new scopes, fixtures and fittings... ok tube rings and dovetails don't cost a lot, but they add up fast enough

John that's very impressive! I had assumed the Raynox was an expensive piece of exotic glass, however I just looked it up and found it's about £40 which is ever so reasonable considering the results you're turning in. Now where's my plastic

Thanks guys. Paul, on an APS-C body, it's about 1:1 at 100mm, 2:1 @ 200mm etc. The IS works but the AF can't cope . I doubt it's as good as a proper macro lens, but it's a very cheap way to get started and can produce the goods, and get's experience of working at the non existent DOF you get at these ranges.

'getting closer' ...that was a joke, John. It's a great shot , I didn't think you could get any closer but you say you have - yes, can we have a look at that one of the eye , sounds interesting. It's too cold for wee beasties here .

John, I guessed it was a joke.. but it can be done... I didn't try and I will next oppo... Here's the pin.. This was shot with about 75mm of ebay extension tube, the 55-250 at 250mm and min focus distance, with the Raynox on the nose.
