Cheers for the feedback.

Thanks for all the kind comments. Was delighted to tick this optical effect off the list.

Hi all,
We have been getting plenty of fog in this part of the world recently (Madrid) so was out with the camera on Saturday morning last with the camera looking for some photos of low lying fog. Anyway, no luck with that, but as the sun broke through I turned my attention to Glories and fogbows, without knowing all that much about them.
I managed to get a photo of this faint glory which appeared for about 4-5 minutes on and off during the 3 hours I was waiting and half frozen to death!

It was quite faint, and I had to do a bit of poking in ACR to get it to show a little more strongly. It's not a particularly nice photo, but I was delighted to see it. Really made it worth the 3 hour wait in the freezing cold.

Are these things reasonably common? I don't normally hear much about them, but from reading about them, it seems as if it's quite easy to spot them when on top of a mountain, with the sun at your back looking down on a cloud, or from a plane. It seems that when the conditions occur, they're quite easy to capture. What have other peoples experiences been?

Hi all,
Just thought I'd share a photo with you all of the waxing gibbous moon last week. Went out with the scope to do some lunar webcam imaging, and while waiting for the scope to cool down, I took a few shots with the DSLR. Seeing was really good on the night.

Also, I was doing some reading about the actual color of the moon and some say there are various weak shade of differing colors, which by satuarating I was able to bring out. The colors seem to show differently on different monitors, I don't know if I overdone it a bit with the stauration. But sure you can let me know.

It's the first time I actually tried this type of lunar photography, usually it's all webcam imaging I do.

Image details:
Picture taken with a Canon 500d, in prime focus with a Celestron CPC 925.
1/50 sec, @F10, ISO 100.
It's a 2 piece mosaic, shot in RAW and processed in Camera Raw and merged in photoshop.

That's a great capture. I was surprised to learn that these can form in winter.
6  General Category / Weather & Atmospherics / Re: What type of arc is this? on: December 01, 2010, 08:42:18 pm
Thanks for the reply Mark. That website is very helpful. I hadn't come across it before. I had been using wikipedia to try and identify the arc, but given that there are so many types it was quite difficult to ascertain which one it is.

Anyway after doing some further study, I think this photo may be an infralateral arc. It seems to be fairly consistent with what I have been reading online. Would anyone else be able to verify this assumption?

Thanks again.

Hi all,
Is was out some time back taking photos of some sun arcs and sundogs that appeared one saturday morning when I came across an arc shown in the bottom left of the image below, which I am unable to name. Can anyone tell me what type of arc it is?

Here's an image of the same arc with a little zoom

Thanks

Thanks for the replies Brian and Martin.
I didn't know what to make of them when I saw them. I'll have to do some study on these terms, but it good to get that insight.
Cheers

Hi,
I took these shots over a month ago and came across them again today. I noticed some strange formations within the clouds and am interested to know if anyone could tell me what is actually happening here.

I took the photos out the window and then rushed outside to see if I could see anything else. I didn't see anything else interesting in the clouds, but after about 10 minutes it got extremely gusty and then after another 10 minutes, the rain came on quite heavily.

Anyway here are the photos, please let me know of you have any ideas as to what was hapening.
Cheers

Thanks for the comments.

These photos were taken in Spain, south of Madrid, just inside the province of Toledo.

If I have any more luck with them, I'll post the images.

Cheers

Hello again,
Just thought I'd pop back and post another few images I obtained of more fallstreak holes.

This one shows one in the distance on the right, with a sundog on the left. I think I can make out the other sundog inside the actual hole (Although with the reduced resolution, I'm not sure its so easy). This could have been a really nice photo if I had had a zoom lens and or better imagination.

The same fallstreak hole, at 55mm, a little later on.

Another one began to form to the right of the first one, in or around the same place where the first one formed. At one stage I could see 5 of these in different parts of the sky. Unfortunately, they were all quite a few miles away, so no spectacular photos. We've been having these alto-cumulus clouds hanging around this neck of the woods for quite a few days now. Hopefully they hang around for the weekend!

Hi again,
Just thought I'd share this image of a fallstreak hole, a bit more impressive than my last one.

Happened to see it out the window of where I work and took this shot with the mobile phone.

Really like the first image. I've been after a halo shot like this for some time, if I get one half as good I'll be happy.
14  General Category / Weather & Atmospherics / Re: Is this a roll cloud? on: November 03, 2010, 06:44:04 pm
Many thanks for both replies.
I was doing a little further reading in work today and although I'm not entirely sure, I think what I seen may have been "Horizontal Convective Rolls" described here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizontal_convective_rolls. Initially I saw 3 similar clouds in parallel much fatter than the one pictured, but for whatever reason didn't go out and get the photo early enough. I'm pretty disappointed for not getting of my backside the moment I saw them. It would have been a nice photo with the 3 of them streaked across the sky. But lesson learned I suppose.

Does anyone know anything about this horizontal convective roll? and if the photos could in fact be this?

Thanks again

Hi,
I was having the dinner the last day when I noticed some strange cloud formation out the window. By the time I got outside and to a place where I could get a decent view they had gone. I thought initially that they seemed like roll clouds. Anyway I waited around to see if anything else appeared and finally took some photos of this cloud that formed after about 40 minutes of waiting. It wasn't quite as big and well defined as the ones I had seen earlier but nonetheless seemed similar. Can anyone tell me what type of cloud it is and what is happening up there? Could this be considered a roll cloud?

Here are the images of the cloud:

Thanks for any advice
