Looked out of window yesterday and noticed a weird cloud formation. It looked like a cap with a cloud forming above it and just as quick as it appeared it was gone. Anyhow here the pictures I got. Seriously though we've got to look at the sky above. It's obviously unstable and humid. What I think has happened is that a bubble of nearly saturated air has found itself less dense than its surroundings, it's risen, some of the water vapour has condensed out (causing the mushroom shape) then the whole lot has got mixed up in the downdraft from the shower cloud above so it's evaporated away. That "line cloud" above it looks really ominous, the sort of thing that sometimes spawns funnels! Title: Re: What's This? The whole sky is filled with a very unstable air mass caused by a warm moist plume from the SW and unstable air from the Atlantic from a eastward moving trough. The clouds which formed are called Altocumulus Castellanus which take on very forms. These clouds are often seen as a warning for possible thunderstorm activity later. The small cloud below the air mass is an accessory cloud associated with the Altocu Castellanus. It doesn't have a name of its own.
I think it looks very cool.
