Title: Low Clouds, Showers & Bows From The Road
Post by: martinastro on July 20, 2008, 09:57:26 pm
A few images taken during the late evening yesterday. We where driving to Ballyronan again and on the road there and back we got caught under some very heavy showers with dark cloud bases which hung very low over the ground. Despite being big cu and cu congestus I thought a funnel was going to drop out on several occasions. At the Lough shore there was a few nice bows reflecting on the water. The boat is the 'Maid of Antrim'. All shots taken through the car window except the bows.

Must be the mountains!

Here on the North Coast, quite a nice day yesterday with lots of sun and occasional thick stratocumulus but no showers. Cirrostratus this morning (most of a 22 deg solar halo visible aound 1015 BST) now thickened into altostratus. Still, got a reasonable night's observing last night - just a suspicion of NLC in the NE in morning twilight.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Declan, it was quite a scary sky. The clouds were very dark and stormy in appearance for a time and on the motorway they seemed to almost touch the ground in the distance which was why I was watching for funnels etc.

Brian, I'm pretty sure it was the mountains indeed. Trophographic lifting and all that. I suspected a hint of NLC formation before midnight but the suspect vanished when the Sun dived lower.

* I'm sure I spelt trop wrong but it's too late at night for my brain to work  ::)
