Title: Sunrise in Feodosiya (August 09)
Post by: Roman White on November 30, 2008, 11:49:29 am
I forgot to post these beautiful photos...

These shots were taken on the morning of August 09, 2008 at the beach of the Black Sea in Feodosiya, Crimea.
The sun rised above the waters of the Bay of the Feodosiya (not exactly above the water - you can see in close-up photos a little strip of a land - it is Kerch peninsula, ~25km away and 20...50m above the sea level.

On one of the clear mornings I got up very early (before 4AM) and went to the beach to meet the Sun. I wasn't alone there but I was the only man with a camera  :D

I arrived at the beach at 4:00AM (EEST). There were already no signs of the night, but it was very peaceful outside.
Have a look on it...

Also I had a nice capture of the ship then.

And then at 4:33 I saw a strange-looking pink strip of light above the sea and shouted "here it is!"
it was the smallest Sun I've ever seen  :D
It started to 'grow' immediately (many birds were flying and sometimes swimming in front of the sunrise)
Visually it looked like this

Next came the beauty of refraction. I have many images of irregular-shaped Sun and several with "disconnection events". Only some of them...

Thanks, Steve, but that's not all.  :)

Very soon (4:40) the Sun became much brighter and more usual-looking

P.S. The sunrise wasn't the only beauty on the beach.
The same place in the evening

And the lunar reflections on water (it was 20 minutes before Aug.16 eclipse  :) )

Great shots Roman! Living on the coast I take many sunset photos and thoroughly enjoy the solitude and beauty of each event.

Lovely selection of images Roman, unfortunately as I'm not close to the coast I don't see the beauty of sunrise and sunset like those.

Thanks John.  :)
I live 500km away from the seacoast - what I can say?... But I have a luck to live just few hundred meters from Vorskla river.

Lovely set of photos- We mainly take photos of sunsets so it's good to see someone up bright and early which it would be in  August. The last one is quite haunting.

Thanks, John C.

The last one is quite haunting.
You mean the nighttime shot? Funny that it wasn't my target to compose that shot with the lunar reflection, boat and the distant ship (and also with 2 persons in the water which are hardly visible in dark)  ;D . I simply needed to waste my time before eclipse start  ;D

Lovely set of shots Roman, they're great. I've not seen the sun looking like that.

Thanks, John (jgs001).  :) Can you believe, I also haven't seen the sunrise in such a beautiful appearance like that one.

Hmmm, it was nearly that bad when I was trying to image it at 10:50 this morning - the Sun stays low at this time of year, but not quite as low as pictured above.

But I persisted & finally got a sort of halfway decent photo of the prominence

Excellent capture Brian!
Actually it's rubbish - this is the sort of performance the same kit turns in with good seeing

August 22nd 2008.

I'm trying to figure out how to chop a few frames out of the AVI so I can demonstrate how bad the seeing was - the raw AVI is near 500 MB so I can't post it!!!

Edit: I chopped out a few frames (consecutive) & have uploaded it http://www.bbhvig.uklinux.net/Bad Seeing.zip (http://www.bbhvig.uklinux.net/Bad Seeing.zip) WARNING 750Kb zipped file, extracts to 3MB Windows AVI. This is monochrome (like the raw capture!) and does not have the overexposed disc blacked out - these are postprocessing fixes to the stacked image.
