Title: Sundog yesterday
Post by: Paul on September 15, 2008, 07:58:13 am
Caught this from my parents house in Surrey yesterday afternoon - I got quite a few shots of both 'dogs - there didn't seem to be an upper part to the halo though.....

Well at least you saw the Sun - total greyout here :'(

It's quite common for the halo to be incomplete - to get a complete halo there needs to be the correct shape clear ice crystals over a wide area of the sky. Particularly when the sun is low, it's quite common to have the dogs but not the upper part of the arc, as shown in your photo.

There are segments of parhelic arc extending out from the dogs on both sides - more obvious on the right hand side - it's a pity the field of view isn't a bit wider so we could see how far they extended.

That's a very nice image Paul. Nice colours to those dogs and some 'par circle' attached to each. I like the way you composed the shot with the lamp post blocking the Sun.

Nice one, Paul.  :) You've been lucky with the weather. As I said before, much of Cirrus (or sometimes smth. other) is needed to see them.
