Title: Jan 2011 Cold Spell Thread
Post by: martinastro on January 03, 2011, 07:00:03 pm
Cold spell number three has arrived so a new thread is needed. This week looks unsettled with mild and cold interludes with snow showers likely including coastal thunderstorms. Snow is already being reported in N. Ireland this evening.

Well Sunday was unusual with gradual cooling to below 0C under a solid grey sky. Yesterday evening (Mon 3rd) it just rained steadily with temp (+2C at 1800) gradually increasing - still raining this morning with temp +5C which is very close to normal for the time of year.

Seems to me that there's still quite a bit of uncertainty regards exact detail for tomorrows snowfall thats pushing north through England - personally I think it will be a wet walk for me to the pub after work tomorrow...

An unexpected increase in power of the current cold spell over Eastern Europe takes place during recent two days.

The weather situation could be shortly described as a distinct arctic intrusion.
As for my home, it was 98% clear for last 4 days IN A ROW!  :D
My meteostation reports daily minima as following (at the same time, maxima are close to -5C):
-21.5C, -22C, -20C, -19C
As you see, it seems to get warmer (and unfortunately the probability of clouds increases).

But I wondered myself when I looked at the meteostation reports from Eastern Ukraine - two recent nights were as cold as -25...-30C (record low today at -30.2C in Bilovods'k, Lugans'ka oblast'). Meanwhile, frosts in neighbouring Russia are just terrifying: regions of Smolensk, Samara and Orenburg report lows at -35...-42C!!! proofpic (http://i052.radikal.ru/1102/8d/95edcfc3eee1.jpg)

Anyway, I like anticyclonic weather in winter! We're going to use the last crystal-clear evening (@-15C) here in Poltava and do some stargazing at the observatory!  8)
