Title: 365 day photography challenge - are you game?
Post by: Conor McDonald on January 01, 2011, 10:53:52 am
Ok so this starts today, whos in?  ;D Basiclly you have to take and post a picture taken everday for the whole of this year. Its a tough tough challenge but I think it can really test and improve your skills as a photographer!

I agree with Paul, this is a great idea. I've often thought of doing this on my Pbase site but had never started it. I think I will now. Thanks Coner. This will make for a very large and long thread, but it should be very interesting and entertaining!

Love the beautiful sunrise to a  New Year Paul!

January 1 A drizzly, drippy day here, I'm under an umbrella in the deep dark woods on my property.

Jan 1st. This is a great idea for a new thread Conor, great thinking on your part. I will do my best to get one image each day whether good or bad just for the sake of keeping this thread going. I hope others join in. This was just taken this evening in my room while feeling a little bored. It's my Dad's 100-400mm Canon IS Ultrasonic lens which I have borrowed for the partial solar eclipse on Jan 4th. I love this lens and don't want to give it back  :)

Great shot Paul. A vey colorful and festive time of year is coming to an end. No offense to anyone, over here Happy Holidays is being "politically correct" (which I don't agree with) rather than Merry Christmas, I'm not sure I have seen Happy Christmas before. Different cultures, different part of the world, just a comment!

Jan 3rd, checking the GFS charts to see if it will clear for the partial solar eclipse tommorow morning, it really doesn't look good so it will be a tough fight.

To do this daily  isn't going to be as easy as you think after home photos have been exhausted. Love the cat,Richard. We're cat people. I'll get one of Freddie tomorrow.

Just taken this one (2123) and as you see it's snowing. Now back to my BBC 2 Bear programme.

Thanks all. Good luck with the eclipse Martin. Our weather will be clear tonight/tomorrow morning for the Quadrantids, it will be a cold spell watching/photographing them. I know what you mean about daily photos John, already looking for things around the home incase I don't leave for awhile!

Watch the bears again tonight ,Mark.. I think they'll rescue the cub, Mom isn't doing her job is she.

Richard..the wild bears we're watching were filmed in Minnesota.Mother bear abandoned the cub to go chasing after a male Ugh lol..The film crew rescued the cub from a tree and and located mom with the tracker and reunited them but the cub isn't doing well  and tonight I think we'll see the crew take the cub to  a sanctuary to be get it back to good health and then release it whenever.

Ok.Meet this monster.

It's one of our two cats - Binny. He was found in a hedge  just weeks old with 3 siblings  and all of them were covered in fleas-mom was killed on the road.My wife had taken the retriever to the vets and knowing a soft touch when they see one asked if she'd like a kitten. When she came home and told me I asked what she'd said in reply. Yes.  Well, that;s it then ,looks like we're having him. We then went to Binibecca, a small village in Minorca (hence his name-Bini) and collected this cat when we got home after a two week holiday. We had to wait anyway whilst the vet. nurs fed them milk through the night. The story is that we had to choose one (before the holiday). There were 4 as I mentioned,  two medium sized ones and a larger one and this little 'runt' of the litter', much smaller than the others. The larger one was throwing his weight about and the two middle ones got together and jumped him and whilst on top of him this little one(who had been thumped by the big one) got the larger one's , foot, which was sticking out,in his mouth and tugged it a couple of times and then he ran  back into a corner of the large pen and put his two front paws over his head waiting for retribution.LOl. I said we'd have him. He's 17 now  and has never lost his feral lineage.

We just took one of the kittens,Martin. The others were homed ok too.

Now it's  'pet's corner' lol. Iggy looks like he's painted gold-Speedy,that's a  brill name. I always have a tale to tell and  I have one re. Speedy and his kin. We were on holiday and called in at Cozumel,Mexico and took a trip to the Mayan ruins-they sacrificed young people there to the rain gods as there was  a drought, some say the drought caused the collapse of the the Mayan culture, anyway, we got there and it was very hot.We went to the ruins which were right by the ocean cliffs. I saw a very large iguana sitting on the rocks getting the sun-very important for them it seems, still as a stone it was. I got quite close,I mean 15 metres. and was taking photos when my wife said 'Can we go I need  to go to the loo'  Lol. Here we were 4000 miles from home looking at a wild iguana and she tells me to stop photographing so she can go to the loo. lol We had to get the bus back to the centre as it was  too far to walk in the heat , it was 38C (100F). I just wanted to stay there looking at it, it was massive. I found this shot and it was exactly like this with the Gulf of Mexico below.Unfortunately it was before my digital camera days - about 12 years ago, I was using film or was it the video ?

Some lovely shots there peeps.

Here's a couple of images which I sent to Moonpig a few weeks ago to get some personalised Christmas cards made up. The big, hairy lump (Smudge) rarely moves off my bed so I do check regularly that he's still breathing!  ;D
BTW the Santa hat was added afterwards in Photoshop.

We were on a West Caribbean Cruise,Richard with Royal Caribbean so we didn't really 'see' anywhere .It  was an amazing location and I do remember that wonderful  Gulf waters colour.
I didn't realise that  iguana link would stretch out like that or I wouldn't have posted it.

Martin-if the link's  a nuisance just delete it, it's been seen now.

Looks like the most chilled out cat ever, Andy.lol. Very nice idea for a christmas card too.

Here's mine for today. After the freeze I found that all the fish, small ones too, were still alive. They must shut down. I couldn't find my polariser Ugh. The large fish are orfe btw.  and the rest  are regular goldfish.

Glad to hear the goldfished survived John. We were basically on the same Western Caribbean /Royal Caribbean trip in 1990. That's a nice backyard Paul, love the shadows that late in the day. My old favorite Martin, Orion. Our several good days of weather turned into one, no rain though, thank goodness. Hope you feel better.

Thanks very much Richard and John, went for a 3 mile walk in the country tonight to sweat out all the badness, the roads were unreal with black ice, with each foot step forward I slid back again on level ground, the 3 miles felt more like 10 when I got back - knackered now.

Glad to see the Goldfish have survived the extreme Winter John  :)

Sorry, should have made it clearer in my post, that shot is of the playpark and football field across the road from my house.  I'd hate a garden that size, i really dont like mowing the grass and it takes me 1-1.5 hours as it is  ;D

Good to hear your getting out and about again Martin, was out taking a few shots of Orion and the sky tonight-freezing too

Superb colours,Richard.

Here's where I talk to you all from. That's a Fender Stratacaster Flamingo Pink the official colour name .It's a  1958 re-issue,same as the Shadows had back then. The Roland Echo chamber (the small unit on the amp) is an original tape (as opposed to digital ) unit  and hence has a very warm sound, the Shadows used this unit from '79-95  and when I play Apache  it sounds great lol. The keyboard is a  NASA control room  unit really  ;D

Echo unit number 12 here.  The Re-301 and Hank has two behind him on stage and is of course playing the red Strat.I can play their tunes and take out the lead  or Bruce Welch's rhythm and play either part myself so I still have The Shads. backing me  ...sort of.  ;D     http://tvsspecialtyproducts.com/page7.htm

Great to see your base of operations John and the impressive guitar/sound system  :)

Beauitful sunset Richard, I would love to have seen that one from the beach myself, however this one is still great and the tops of the trees contrasting sharply against the crimson sky is a winner.

Day 6. An unexpected very heavy snow shower at dusk this evening, grabbed this quick shot from my bedroom window using the 400mm IS lens hand held. To show how fast this lens is I took an 18mm shot with the kit lens and got a dark image, however using this 400mm zoom in overcast dusk darkness I collected more light. It's a beauty of a lens, fast optical systems are the way to go.

That's quite a little studio you have there John. Martin, that 400mm L Lens looks to be a beautiful piece of glass between the snow in this thread and the Moon in the other, WOW!
January 6, I took the hint from Martin's crescent Moon and grabbed this one this evening before the low clouds moved in.

Martin, I'm so impressed with your endless imagination in composing these nightscape images, this one is just fantastic. I initially thought that was a gravel road, but I forget what time of year it is and the weather you have had. Great Stuff!! I saw your photo on SW.com, nice job.

Have you ever tried to upload an image to Tinypics and get a rude message back that your IP Address has been banned for violating the terms of use? I sent them a nasty email asking them to explain why, tried uploading it again, it worked!. I may be banned now for sure!!!

January 7  I spotted this guy on the Marina Dock at the Port, felt so sorry for him, but I looked at some of the others and they all have battle scars, these are pretty fresh. Survival of the fittest I guess.

That looks like a very nice neighborhood you live in Paul, great looking cells in the distance!

That does look very cold and nasty out there Martin! Who is that ghostly figure standing next to you?

January 8  Here is the ridgeline east of my property, it was clearcut long before we moved in and the Douglas Fir are slowly recovering.

Missed the weekend. Will see what I can get today.  Wonderful seal photo,Richard. It does look a bit sad,  golden retrievers can look very sad too at times,  must be just the way they look ,it's a tough life having to fight like that all the time usually over mates and territory I assume.

We're in a smokeless zone so we can't have a proper fire  like yours,Paul - really cosy.

Good to see you clearing the windscreen properly ,Martin. I've seen cars being driven with just enough space to see through  the frosted screen.

I was having a problem with both the forum website and Tinypics last night and thought I had loaded my 365 day challenge photo successfully, but evidently not since it didn't appear. Here it is none-the-less, hopefully it still counts for yesterday to keep my consecutive day streak alive, lol. The Moon and Jupiter.

It's raining outside with not much happening, so yet again here's another indoor shot to pass away Day 10. This is a shot of the wardrope door in my room with a newspaper article about Conor and I, and below it are two images which a certain person on this forum will recognise straight away  ;)

Congratulations on the article Martin and Conor. I don't know to whom you are referring about the photographs, but they're spectacular.

January 10  Here are the telescopes I have posession of, the front one is my Meade 4.5" and the other 10" Meade blongs to our South Coast Astronomy Club. I don't use either one as much as I should.

Thanks Richard, the article was from away in the middle of last year but it's still hanging on the door that long. The two prints were taken by John Wright on this forum showing thunderstorms he had captured during his recent storm chasing trip to the US in 2010.

Love the 10" reflector Richard, that's just the kind of scope I love to use  :)

Well done,Richard for keeping up. Oh,well, I didn't realise you had astro. kit like that,I thought I must get some shots of the ISS like Richard's and Anton's,I suspect  Anton has the proper gear  too. lol.

Ah..lol..Martin,I was going through all the books, some good stuff there, a man of intellect. Did you mention someone called Conor in that newspaper photo ?  The name's familiar  ;D

Wonderful supercells too.  ;D

Meet Husdon folks...he's named after Hudson Bay,Canada,  home of the white bears. http://www.nathab.com/polar-bear-tours?gcid=S19453x001&keyword=polar%20bears%20churchill&gclid=CO6tm5P-sqYCFU0w3godJSYrmA

For those who are familiar with music he's playing a Chopin piece. Nocturne .  Opus 9 No. 2. Why not have a listen-you'll recognise it, I'm sure and  will enjoy it - very relaxing.

Enjoyed your update John, very nice relaxing music, hard to believe the Bear can play that, I must get one of those from the local pet shop  ;D

I am done with the 365 day photo opp for one single reason. Taking an image of something in the house, or taking a rubbish image just to fill in another day is not my idea of a fun time. I am not passionate about animate objects or taking macro shots of a salt shaker just for the sake of passing the day just to stay in the game, this does not interest me at all and takes the fun away from photography, the actual concept actually encourages the taking of poor or rushed images to keep up with the pace so it's quantity and not quality so why bother?. I'd rather take images when it suits me and of subjects I'm passionate about. The very thought of taking another image in my house tonight (raining again outside) is enough to put me off using the camera so I'm calling it a day. I could take images for 365 days easily and complete the challenege but there is no fullfillment in doing that just for the sake of it and I am learning nothing at the same time. I'm now going to focus on what I enjoy doing with the camera in my own time.

Good luck to anyone else who wishes to continue the challenege though - the comments I made about rubbish images refer to myself of course and not anyone else incase you were wondering  :)

Its funny you've made that decision Martin cause i came to the same conclusion tonight.  I haven't been keeping up the challenge either cause i simply have nothing interesting to shoot. Thought about doing a macro shot of something tonight but then though nah, cant be bothered. It was a good idea at the time but i imagined by the end of the year i would have everything in the house photographed ;D

Reading that comment reminded me of an old thread on another forum several years ago. To read it, click on this link (http://astrochat.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=559) but don't bother reading beyond the first page.

BTW don't take it as being serious as it was all very friendly banter and as you may have gathered, 'twas a cloudy night with nothing worth watching on the telly either!  ;D
