Title: Noctilucent Cloud Season 2010
Post by: martinastro on May 08, 2010, 02:30:38 pm
It's that time of year again everyone!. The NLC seasons typically runs from late May to early August, however displays outside the conventional window period have happened in the past, and will do so again, for this reason it would be a good idea for observers to scan the post-sunset and pre-dawn sky from now on incase there are indeed any early displays. Observations of early and late season NLC displays are of much greater scientific value. Major displays will appear either side of the Summer Solstice and it's particulary during this time period that photographers hope to catch the display of a life time.  Let's hope for a season which will be as thrilling and rewarding as the spectacular 2009 season!.

I wish everyone on here the very best of luck and ask that all NLC images, visual reports, discussion, and alerts be posted on this thread so things remain organized. This year, if possible, I hope to be posting alerts on the forum to tip off any new NLC observers to sudden displays. Thanks in advance

It should be an interesting season. Many believe that NLCs are tied into the Solar Cycle in some as yet not understood way, and that increased solar activity may bring a reduction in the number and intensity of NLC displays - we shall see.

Of course Solar activity seems to have calmed down a bit recently. I must fess up and admit that I caused this by purchasing a PST recently :)

Paul.

I'm really looking forward to this years NLC season - no reports or sightings that i'm aware of globally as of yet.

Good to hear you have a PST Paul, I thought this grotty weather was due to somebody buying a new scope  :P though saying that I took delivery of a new camera for solar yesterday so I expect the cloud and rain will carry on for sometime yet.  Look forward to hearing your first impressions! :)

Oh ... I thought it was my Lunt solar wedge ...

Anyhow, with the clear sky last night & the twilight persisting almost all night on the northern horizon, I was wondering how long it would be before someone spotted a NLC!

I was thinking the same thing Brian, the duration of the twilight glow last night was very impressive and I couldn't help but scan the horizon just in case, and my first thought was 'there will be NLCs soon'.

Hey guys, haven't been at our forum for a long time (much of work). I'm looking forward 2010 NLC season too. I may eventually look at the sky during May 25 - June 15, but I hope I'll be able to monitor activity on each clear night after June 15.

P.S. Does anybody think that recent eruption of Eyjafjallajokull may enchance NLC activity?

Can't see why it should, the ash isn't even reaching the lower stratosphere....

Hi Roman,

Good to hear from you again! :)

Don't think the volcano will have any effect on NLC - its been throwing ash anywhere from 3-8km upwards, NLC occur at 75-85km altitude, so quite a range between them.  Most likely effect it will have is sunsets tbh...

Mark  ::)

Interesting thought Roman, most of the volcanic dust/ash seems to be lower in the atmosphere, however you never know, there could be interesting atmospheric effects. Hard to say but time will tell.

Out of interest, here's the link to the 2009 NLC thread on this forum.

Just been scanning through last years NLC thread, some great images and discussions.  Im very excited about seeing a NLC display for the first time this year-never even knew about them til I joined this forum, it will be another tick off the list!!  :)  Good luck everyone.

Here's a few thoughts on the 2010 season sent to me by Ken Kennedy, the European NLC coordinator...

''I feel it will be a very interesting year especially with the Sun returning to activity. Long term reports (Gadsden) of NLC activity certainly show a correlation between solar activity and NLC with maximum NLC sightings about a year or two following solar minimum. Higher levels of solar radiation may well not allow the temperature at the mesopause to drop to the critical temperature for ice nucleation and also the higher UV emissions may dissociate water more quickly so there may be two reasons for the inverse relationship between NLC and solar activity.

As it stands, 2009 was a year of very high frequency of NLC and I don't see much chance of a further increase.  I would expect NLC activity to remain possibly as high as last year but it will be interesting to see if frequency decreases over the next year or two. The other area I have explored is a bit more subjective and that is brightness. However, taking a random selection of 198 observations which I received last year (your ones were included), 32 of these gave a brightness estimates of 4 or 5 out of 5.  Within this selection, observers saw NLC on 40 nights. Of these 40 nights, 13 were scored as having a brightness of 4 or 5. These figures are considerably higher than in previous years and seem to back up my gut feeling that brightness has also been increasing, especially in 2009. This may be because there is an increase in water vapour at mesopause altitudes perhaps because of dissociated methane which has been increasing since 2007. It may also reflect the slower dissociation of water vapour with low solar activity''...Ken Kennedy.

Negative observation of NLC on May 15/16th during an all-night session, twilight arch is now visible throughout the night.

Post by: martinastro on May 24, 2010, 10:16:12 pm
Hearing about two possible faint NLC sightings from the ROI last night (23/24th) in the NW, if this was the case then there could be further displays tonight.

May 24/25: Clear night (something of a rarity this month), NLC negative.

Title: Re: Noctilucent Cloud Season 2010
Post by: martinastro on May 25, 2010, 03:14:20 pm
Hi Mark, there was another report last night but I saw the images and can confirm that they are moonlit cirrus clouds - no NLCs, so it was mistaken identity.

I did an all night watch last night, used 10x50 binos to study the twilight arch but definitely no NLCs on display, however I suspect the first sights are upon us any night now  :)

Title: Re: Noctilucent Cloud Season 2010
Post by: Roman White on May 25, 2010, 04:03:36 pm
I am back to Poltava now and the last days of May are the probable beginning of the season here too. However I'm not sure there will be much of NLC activity until mid-June (and I won't be able to monitor each night during next 3 weeks), though I will be ocassionally looking at the twilight zone.

Eyes peeled all of you!

NLC forum had the first potential sighting from Scotland in the early hours this morning.  No pics or nything so atm it's still unconfirmed, however it is from a seasoned observer - time to up the DEFCON level!

Interesting! - I did an all night NLC watch last night with a friend and no NLCs were visible in a crystal clear sky until 03.20 or so.

Good clear section along the horizon last night - negative NLC observation. They are late this year  :). Hopefully, when they do appear any night now, they will have good structure since it's almost June.

That was May 30/31st - weird because it was clear here on the horizon and I saw nothing - although the evening sky was clouded out. Tonight is forecast to be clear so....

lol - yea but it's the SW sightings page, I don't think he has any control over what gets posted on there, would be different if it was the homepage though  :). Surprised those Russian sightings aren't on there. I wonder if we will be treated to a display tonight, clear spells are forecast, can you imagine the amount of people who will be watching the twilight this evening...fingers crossed for something. Best of luck everyone!!

Another sighting from Denmark last night (June 1st) during the evening, details on Spaceweather.com...

Thick cirrostratus blocked the sky here last night despite stars being visible it was hopeless for NLCs. Perhaps tonight with be the night.

Advice from the experts please :)

I looked out the window at 0245 BST and thought "we're on!". But not so fast.......

The shapes are all wrong - High Cirrus? Or are there some NLCs in there? Borderline case at best I reckon?

Paul.

Id say its high cloud Paul. We observed the display most of the night but from 2am onwards it was starting to cloud out so I called it a night.

Title: Re: Noctilucent Cloud Season 2010
Post by: martinastro on June 03, 2010, 12:41:39 pm
Definitely high cloud, I watched until 03.30 and there was no NLC here, although I did see that exact same high level cloud catching the Sun. During the evening, before it cleared here, there were reports of NLC.

Indeed - it looks like a late kick-off this year. I had wondered what effect the increased solar activity might have, although many say there's a 1-2 year lag on that effect. We shall see.

Confirming - saw our first NLC display last night from just after midnight (unsure of exact time of visual sighting) but very good structure was obvious with the naked eye by 00.21 BST. Display remained visible until 02.30 approx and was in the NW to NE sky 60 degrees long and 6-7 degrees high. Type 3 brightness with band and wave structure, glowing white-green colours were visible visually. The herringbone structure in the 10x50s was great. First images aren't great, but at least the wrinkles can be ironed out for when the big guys appear.

Richard by far the easiest & most user-friendly has to be Photobucket (http://s848.photobucket.com/albums/ab50/astrochat/). As you can see from the example in my link (this account is attached to another of my astro forums BTW), you can customise its appearance to a great degree and to post images here, simply copy the 'IMG Code' under the relevant thumbnail & then merely paste the code into your post here. There are simple editing facilities on Photobucket, should you require them, which include a resize option.

In all of the years that I've used PB, I can't recall a time when the site crashed or even had any sort of technical problem.

Highly recommended. (http://www.mackenzie1963.freeserve.co.uk/Smilies/AMac's/fing27%5B1%5D.gif)

Post by: martinastro on June 10, 2010, 05:14:48 pm
Thanks for posting the photobucket link Andy, that's very helpful. Imageshack is another good host which places thumbnails in the forum body. I still prefer tinypic as the best, since I have been using it for years, however recently you have to type in two words of text so the image can be uploaded, and this has to be repeated every time you add another image, not to mention that on occasion one can't understand the letters in the first place which is very frustrating.

Richard, keep a close eye on your twilight sky by mid Summer, NLCs were captured from Nebraska last year so you never never know, it's possible a rare display could happen from your lat, and if anyone is up to the challenege it's you  :). Depends on how this season shapes up, so far it's nothing compared to 2009 however they are unpredictable and there could be monster dispalys within a week.

Here's one image from a few I got earlier of a short lived display in the NE. Some strange structure on the right hand side. This was taken at 01:47UT. I first spotted it from my back door stretching into the E then raced up the road to get a few images.

I seen the same thing (13/14th) this morning when the clouds suddenly parted, observed 3 sections in the NW, N, NE sky 25 degrees high and fairly bright with complex structure, bands, herringbone, small lacunous holes and whirls - first decent structure this year so far. Pity it didn't stay clear enough for better images here.

Nice shots all! Here's just one of the wide shots from the display, I have another one with R1 McNaught in the NLC's and will post it later. The comet was visible to the naked eye, but just with averted vision. Looked nice in the binos, but would have been quite something in a scope!

Right..It's 9.20pm and I'm off to see what I can see from an elevated position.  I'm determined to catch a shot of these NLC's. I keep coming on here to see these lovely photos. I'm, taking a 50mm f.2.8. 17-40 f4 and 70-200 f2.8.One of them should do the trick, surely. Lol.  I'll just have to be guided by the LCD

I really envy the amazing scenery you have over there which makes the perfect backdrop for your shots.

Fairly nice display last night...

Did you find the arrows useful for locating the NLC's Martin or did you feel that they detracted from the overall shot? (http://www.mackenzie1963.freeserve.co.uk/Smilies/AMac%27s/1184%5B1%5D.gif)

lol Andy, I just had to annotate the image for new obervers who may not have been able to spot where those faint NLCs are on the image, that was before they grew in size and were barely visible visually. R1 doesn't show up on the compressed image very well but it's better on the high res version. Good luck tonight, and thanks for the feedback on last night's display.  :)

Cheers Conor - good to get a proper display now, hope we get plenty more of those!

Absolutely enchanting, wonderful, superb- What else can I say ? The clouds came over for 90% of my sky.  last night so I'll be out again tonight, clear skies all day and all night.

What time should I start  and when can I go to bed ? lol Which would be the best lens from those I mentioned  too ? I meant to say I had the 28mm f2.8 not  the 50mm

Conor..thanks for the google thing but not sure what you mean by using it to 'find your spot'  I have a very good location 1 mile from me on a hill with a view to the North, NW and NE .I wouldn't have recognised the top photos as NLC's but of course the photos after that I would. I did see Venus and the  moon though Lol.

Title: Re: Noctilucent Cloud Season 2010
Post by: Conor McDonald on June 16, 2010, 07:27:09 pm
Any time after about 11 really John, as for the lens its good to have about a 50mm zoom at least so you can get in abit closer and capture some detail. Though for the bigger shots the wide angle is great. Well on google street view I can go to the place which looks good in my head for nlc and then check out what its like on that street view, its veryy handy!

My wife has just rung from Swindon and asked if I was trying again to photograph them, "Of course" I said,"I've got my reputation  to think about' Lol. I can't come on here every day and see these marvellous photos and not try can I .Lol.

Thanks very much lads for the comments.

Martin, the shot of the house with the blue lights was taken very quickly, had to be!  Stopped car on main road quickly grabbed tripod and two shots, into car and down the road like the clappers! All in all I took about 70 images from different locations.

Conor, the closeups were with a Sigma 70-300mm at 70mm. It's a great lens and gets you in nice and close to good detail like there was this morning. It's not a fast lens but bril on twilight shots.

Thanks Richard, I'm glad you like them. I tend to keep moving while I'm out that time of the morning, I'm so close to an HM Prison you tend to get stopped from time to time and asked "who are you and what are you doing"! But I get on ok with them lol!

John, they were all taken the morning of June 16th, I took about 70 images the first one at 0043UT and the last at 0205UT by which time I didn't need headlights!

Apologies for the late reply, I've had trouble getting the site to load.

Clear "night" :o first one for ages here - NLCs in the north, at first faint bands low in the north but developing (by 0130 UT) into a medium display reaching to 20 degrees altitude with "herring bone" patterning - still not very bright but the first I've seen this year.

Congratulations Paul on your first NLC sighting!, I knew you would do it  :). There's not a darn thing wrong with those images either, in fact they are great!. You picked up great structure!. Hopefully we will see another tonight.

Another large NLC display on June 18/19th 00.15 - 03.45 BST, type 3 brightness, +30 degrees high and +160 degrees long in the NW to E of N sky sector with bands, waves, whirls, billows crossing a band. Nice electric blue colour during middle of night then silvery-grey before dawn when it was very extensive. Images taken from Maghera countryside.

I hope you don't mind, I loaded those last two images into Microsoft ICE for panoramas and they turned out awesome, three or four spanning the entire NLC would have been unbelievable! Here's a couple I got, my trouble was trying to get shelter from the biting wind, boy it was cold! It was a funny display in a way, I had to keep checking that the lens was in focus, it lacked the vivid structure of the one on the 16th. Anybody notice the golden/green colour at both ends?

Those are great shots John. That brightest star must be Capella, I've heard several mention it in thier photos. It gives me an idea of where you fellows are looking in your sky to see the NLC's. I saw on SW they were seen in Montana last night, a little further north than I, but I'll keep my fingers crossed they keep creeping southward.

John, stick with it, you will catch a display soon - that's a promise!  :), hope you get some clear skies on the nights ahead.

Beautiful display last night!, June 19/20th, started off at 01.20 as just a fant streak barely visible with naked eye however it soon intensified to type 4 brightness, reaching 50 degrees high and 120 degrees long in the NW to N sector. Stucture was just wonderful with large scale electric blue whirls which could be seen moving in real time, they looked like glowing smoke among the bright stars. The section near Capella was remarkable in the form of a  towering vertical formation 50 degrees high and shaped like a whirlwind or tornado before 'roping out'. Also seen a borderline Bootid fireball with silver-green colours lasting for many sec's, orange fragments could be seen falling from it. NLCs vanished approx 03.45 BST.

Depends on where you are.

Back to "usual" weather here ... cloud spilled in about 0030 just as it was getting dark enough to observe. A short break at lunchtime allowed me to get a set of solar observations (bad seeing though) but now warm, humid & grey ... my second least favourite weather combination (least favourite is hot, humid & grey!)

Another great series Martin!  8)

Work means i'm kinda restricted to the evening side of midnight displays of NLC, apart from weekends when I get a 'stay up all night' pass.  Weather on this side of midnight has been frustratingy cloudy - not total cloud cover, just a great wadge in the Northern sky  >:(  As we head more towards July evening displays should feature more, as hopefully should clear skies -patience will pay off, i'm sure!  ::)

Another beauty here this morning (June 20/21) which covered the whole northern sky when it cleared. Capella was embedded in the middle of it and at dawn, well around 03:15BST it could be seen at the zenith. Saw a beautiful pass of the ISS at 02:42BST it was over 40 degrees and I was thinking "I wonder are they are imaging the NLC"! Took quite a few images but they're still in the camera at present, will pick a couple and post them later.

Delighted to get that confirmed!, and glad someone else seen that display  :)

I got very lucky with the weather last night, June 20/31st,  it was cloudy but a brief clearance appeared so I got some quick snaps of a major NLC display in the N, it was type 3 brightness and 25 degrees high when I first spotted it at 02.15 BST, with silver/blue colours and large whirls, sharp bands and waves. It clouded over again but by 03.15 BST I could see the top of the display directly at the zenith! - first time this has happened during the 2010 season. Images are hampered by murky sky conditions and trop cloud. Observed a brilliant pass of the ISS, it made a close approach to Jupiter, the pair looked spectacular.

Thanks Martin, you got a nice set yourself, mind you at one stage it was touch and go here with the cloud, then as if by magic it cleared! Glad you got to see it.

Thanks Richard, it was a very high bright pass but unfortunately nowhere near the NLC's. That image is looking almost SE so it shows you just how bright the sky is this time of year. I also had a visit from a lovely owl about that time, that has happened nearly every time this season!

Check out spaceweather.com, that looks to have been a beauty of a display last night, and clearly the best of the year so far, it was clear here and not a thing of interest visible. Maybe tonight...

Great looking display alright Martin. I will be observing tonight as well if the weather co-operates, there is good clear skies out to the west of Ireland over the Atlantic atm.

Great stuff Tyler, I wish you and Mike the best of luck, keep watching those twilight arches - it could pay off  :)

Paul, I see a clearance here now low in the W and NW, nothing visible yet but all that could change in an hour, good luck.

After a long wait another beauty appeared last night, June 28/29th, I first spotted it from 02.00 BST and last seen it AFTER 04.00 BST while the dawn was breaking and Birds singing. At this time it was over 60 degrees high and actually moved over planet Jupiter then into the southern sky above the Moon!. Beautiful strucure, whirls, sharp bands/folds casting shadows onto other NLC features, lacunosus holes, waves, billows crossing a band and bright knots. The display was in two sections, the far NW then NE, it was the NE one which put on a great show at type 4 brightness with electric blue colours. The NW section was golden-yellow in colour. Got a few images.

Great images Martin, like the last one with the road and fence.  It was an awesome sight last night im so glad i made the effort and drove out to a quiet location. The NE display was growing in size all the time right over the lights of Omagh which made for some nice scenes, was buzzing after this and couldnt get to sleep for ages!!  :)

First two images are the NW display.

Great shots as usual Martin. I'll echo Paul and say my favorite is the fencepost lined road with Jupiter shining brightly alongside the NLC's. Those mid-level clouds put a lot of texture and contrast into the images. Good job!

You did a a great job in capturing the NLC's and the city lights Paul. I especially like the image of the N/E display over Omagh, great composition and exposure without blowing the highlights out on either one.

I'm still hoping the NLC's will drop down as far south as Oregon, I looked back at my only sighting which was on 13 July of last year, so there's still hope!!

Thanks very much Richard!

Paul, those are amazing images, top class actually, I love the way you caught the NLCs from that high location with the lights of Omagh below - congrats on your success, very impressive captures!. It was a really nice display wasn't it, the NW section had great structure but the NE was the show stopper. Hope we get another tonight if we can get a clear sky.

Thanks guys. The focus wasnt great on the zoomed in shots ( prob to busy singing in my head to phil collins to remember to check ) so I had to sharpen and it through of some of the detail. The reflections arent bad, but really need still water to pull that trick off, all in all a good nights shooting!

Yes, Phil Collins really added to the magic of the night  :)

Here's a few from the same location, we where on the bank of the River Bann outside Kilrea, display lasted from 01.05-03.15 BST, peaked at type 4 brightness with veil, bands, waves, and whirls. The NLCs could be seen reflecting on the water along with Capella, at one stage the river was subtle blue due to the electric blue colour.

Great shots John. Those must have been taken closer to dawn than most, as you say,  because of the redness in the clouds near the horizon. Good job!

Title: Re: Noctilucent Cloud Season 2010
Post by: martinastro on July 05, 2010, 03:44:46 pm
Well caught John!, I was clouded out but could see them glowing through the clouds before dawn so it must have been a very intense display indeed, perhaps a good omen for another tonight.

Thanks all for the comments much appreciated.

JohnC, it was a strange feeling but I knew somehow that I was not alone but couldn't see anybody. I mentioned it to my family who have warned me not to use that spot again! This morning I was in the middle of a 12 acre field just to be sure ;D

Richard, I checked the times on the images for this morning and they were taken between 0313 and 0358BST and sunrise was listed as 0458BST so it was bright. Maybe some of that redness on the clouds came from Belfast which would be in that direction.

Martin, pity about the cloud, it was a nice display but the ordinary cloud spoiled it a bit. There is talk in another place about this narrow band and the complex structure of Lacunosus holes above, pity I couldn't see what was below it. The band itself was very intense. Display brightness probably about 4 but hard to say with the sky so bright. It was also very high probably 30+ degrees when I left and at one stage reached all the way over to the moon.

You were rite Paul  :)

Cloud and rain all evening and for first part of the night, the clouds suddenly broke and the rain stopped before 02.00 to reveal a crystal clear sky to the N, and I immediately spotted an intense NLC display taking up the entire NW to N skyline, however they were only 10 degrees high, already type 4 brightness! with vibrant white and gold colours with more subtle blue visible on the uppermost sections. Nice well-formed thick bands and very fine sharp herringbone/waves, this looked to be a beauty, I expected it to keep growing for at least another hour before dawn and become a major display, however much to my disappointment it faded rapidly within 15 min's, and by 03.00 it was gone, shocking how quickly this happend!. Only got a few images which were rather rushed. Still good to see another display though! 01.55 - 02.45 BST. I just wonder what it was like earlier in the night while I was clouded out.

Thanks Paul, I was amazed how rapidly they faded, probably the fastest fade time I've ever seen with NLCs!, hopefully there will be another tonight. Many of the recent displays seem to be before dawn, nothing extensive in the evening yet which is strange.

Thanks Mark and Roman.

Roman, you are not the only one, in my opinion this has been the worst NLC season I have ever seen, the displays just don't come up to standard in comparison to previous years, hoping for one last good one before the season ends though.

I'm looking at the northern sky and there looks to be NLCs  there-sunset was 2130 - I'm not sure. I've looked at these photos here and they look the same. Now 2307-must be the last of the sunset this early in the night.

No probs. John-help yourself. I did  increase 'brightness'  ( I tend to use that rather than exposure) and saw the result you've got here but then I thought well, that's not what they looked like and I wanted you all to see how they actually were but with the levels enhancement it does look much better.

Title: Re: Noctilucent Cloud Season 2010
Post by: John9929 on July 10, 2010, 02:14:29 am
Very gracious of you John, was the dislpay really that dark? "Brightness" tends to do little only brighten as far as I can see. A touch of levels and maybe histogram (for colour) gives a much better result. You are not fabricating the image just enticing out some of the detail that is already there. Have a look at this one, and see the fine detail thats already in the image.

Thanks both, we might get lucky again tonight so I'll  be vigilant and any hint of them and I'll be out-I'll have the kit ready too - I spent 10 minutes getting the gear together as I'd been changing camera backpacks earlier in the day and hadn't finished.I actually thought it was just the backend of the light from the sunset, and had to check the photos here for comparison

It was fairly dark  John. I'd say it was more like your photo when I first saw it from home and as soon as I got to my location I realised the best had gone.  The heavy black area below it and encroaching on it was a massive wall of cloud. I had the shutter open for about 15 seconds on f5.6 at first and quickly went to 2.8 and then put the 1.4 X on it and that reduced it to f4.  I'd googled how to take them just to remind myself  and 20 sec was the very longest recommended. I'm a novice when it comes to Levels and noted what you said about Brightness, doesn't that affect the histogram then? I better check that. I don't think I even looked at the histogram. I'd just read  a couple of weeks ago in one of these write-ups on Levels that Brightness does the whole photo whereas Exposure doesn't. I need to get to grips with it . I have PS 2 Lightroom 2 and Viveza 2 ...lol..You'd think I'd get it right with all that . Any advice is very welcome and appreciated.
